After a short marriage with Winnie Christie in 1945, Farmer Jr married Lula A. Petersen in 1949. Him and his wife had two daughers, Tammy and Abbey. Lula died in the year 1977.

Farmer Jr. was elected to be the National director of CORE in Frebruary, 1961. He belived that segregation needed to end.

He worked on lauching the Freedom Riders to fight against segregation on bus travel. In May, 1961, Farmer Jr. launched the first ride. He belived that African American's had the right to get in a bus wothout being segregated.

After resigning from leading CORE in the mid-1960's. Farmer Jr. published his book "Freedom-When?" in 1966. He believed on expresing his point of view to others.

In 1998, Farmer Jr. was awarded the Presidental Medal of Freedom from President Bill Clinton. He belived that all the work he did was worth it.

James Leonard Farmer Jr. died in July 9, 1999. He died at the age of 79 yeard. (died the year I was born)
