In 1066, he is credited with accompanying William the Conqueror. In recognition of service, he was given lands in Perthshire (Glen Lyon).

It is now a generally accepted that the Lyon' of Scotland are descendents of the de Leons from Normandy in north France. Roger De Leon came to Scotland to help Edgar, son of Malcolm III, in his fight against his uncle, Donald Bane, who wanted to take the throne at the end of the 11th century.
