    When J.J. was born (12/18/1856). In 1876, he received a small scholarship to attend Trinity College at Cambridge to study mathematics. When at Trinity College at Cambridge, he became the head of the Cavendish Laboratory. Physicist Sir J. J. Thomson researched the behavior of electricity, discovering the electron in 1897. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics, in 1906. 1912, he also discovered that neon was composed of two different kinds of atoms. This was the first use of mass spectrometry.
