Italians and American Immigration

  • Catalyst for Immigration

    Drought, over population, soil erosion, send Southern Italians and other immigrant groups in search of prosperity in the United States
  • Oriental Exclusion Act

    The Oriental Exclusion Act was passed, restricting and excluding many Asian Immigrants. Due to the decrease in Asian workforce, this allowed for other immigrant groups to fill the gap.
  • Statue of Liberty Dedicated

    The Statue of Liberty, a gift from France, is dedicated in New York City. The Statue of Liberty becomes the iconic symbol that many immigrants see as they enter Ellis Island.
  • Federal Control of Immigration

    The Federal Government takes control of the immigration process, requiring each state to report immigrant reports.
  • Ellis Island

    Ellis Island is established as the cheif immigration center of the East Coast. Until it's close in 1956, it processed over 12 million immigrants.
  • Dillingham Commision

    Dillingham Commission was established by congress to study and research the effects of immigration in the United States.

  • Peak of Italian Immigration

    From 1911 to 1920, this was considered the peak of Italian Immigration. A reported 2 million Italians relocated to the United States.
  • Dillingham Reports

    The Dillingham Commission publishes a 42 volume report claiming that new immigration from Southern and Eastern Europe will threaten to subvert American society. This is the catalyst for the Quota Acts later in the 1920s.
  • US Enters WWI

    The US enters WWI. This allowed many immigrants to enlist, and also slowed down immigration, but led to a slight increase in refugees.
