Positively Social: The Contributions of Auguste Comte

    Isidore-Auguste-Marie-François-Xavier Comte was born 19 January 1798 in Montpellier, France. It was the tail end of the French revolution. Although for the better of the country, France was led to an economic depression. The population increase from 1789 to 1799 caused spikes in unemployment and consumer prices leading to a poverty-stricken society. This was the world Comte was born into. The influences of it bear his legacy to philosophy.

    Inspiration

    Auguste Comte began working for Henri de Saint-Simon as his secretary in 1817. During this time, Comte was highly influenced by Saint-Simon's political and economic ideology on a sustaining society made up of all the different working class.

    Positive Philosophy

    Over the course of twelve years starting in 1830, Comte developed and wrote the Course of Positive Philosophy. In the six volumes he analyzed the course of individual scientific disciplines describing how they pass through three stages of evolution. The first stage was theological; metaphysical second; and last, scientific (positive) (Ganes). The final stage left us with what we call Positivism which is one of Comte’s primary contributions to philosophy.
  • Societal Philosophy of Science

    In Auguste Comte’s fourth volume of Course of Positive Philosophy he began describing the philosophy of science affected by society (Ganes). He theorized that the human intellect, just like scientific disciplines, passed through the same three stages of theological, metaphysical, and scientific. Comte is credited for the term sociology and the foundations of our modern studies. This is his biggest contribution to science and philosophy alike.
