Lakatos and his then girlfriend fled Hungary following the Soviet invasion after he stopped following Communist beliefs. The fled from Hungary and eventually made it to England.

Lakatos was given a position at the London School of Economics where he wrote papers on the philosophy of science and mathematics. He eventually rose to the position of Professor of Logic at this school and stayed there until his death.

Lakatos published his doctoral thesis entitled "Essays in the Logic of Mathematical Discovery". This thesis covered the history of the Euler-Descartes formula.

Published in four separate parts in the British Journal for Philosophy of Science this series expanded on the findings of Lakatos' doctoral thesis and his views on the philosophy of mathematics.

Lakatos died of a heart attack at the age of only 51 years old.
