  • Yalta Conference

    Yalta Conference
    Held in febuary of 1945, the Yalt Conference was attended by governemnt of the United States, United Kingdom and the Soviet Union (President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Premier Joseph Stalin). The purpose of this conference was to discuss and decide the post war restructuring for Europe, and more specifically, for Germany.

    Communist Mao Zedong takes control of China and establishes the People's Republic of China
    After Mao Zedong came to power in China, he crated the Peoples Republic of China. Zedong's first order of business was to overhaul the system that China had in place for land ownership, as well as impliment extensive land reforms. Mao believed that socialism would be the best idea for his republic, and decided to following the First Five-Year Plan based on a Soviet-style of centrally controlled economy throughout the People's Republic of China.

    U.S. and other U.N. members fight North Korean forces
    America called on the United Nations to use force to get the North Koreans out as they had ignored the Security Council’s resolution. This was also voted for and once again the Russians could not use their veto as they were still boycotting the United Nations. United Nations troops landed in an amphibious assault at Inchon. The landing was a huge success and the United Nations effectively cut the North Korean army in half and pushed them out of South Korea.

    Castro would remain in power of Cuba for over 50 years. The installation of the Communist Government in Cuba caused great fear for America, due to the proximity of America and the now communist Cuba.
  • Vietnam split at 17th parallel

    Vietnam split at 17th parallel
    The Seventeenth parallel was the provisional military demarcation line between North and South Vietnam established by the Geneva Accords of 1954. The division of Vietnam occurred during the Geneva Conference, after the Viet Minh fought to end almost 100 years of colonial rule in French Indochina.
  • Warsaw Pact formed

    Warsaw Pact formed
    The Soviet Union and seven of its European satellites sign a treaty establishing the Warsaw Pact, a mutual defense organization that put the Soviets in command of the armed forces of the member states. The Warsaw Pact, so named because the treaty was signed in Warsaw, included the Soviet Union, Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria as members. The treaty called on the member states to come to the defense of any member attacked by an outside force.

    The launch of Sputnik, the first artificial satellite, brought the dawn of the space age, and increased conflict between the United States and the U.S.S.R. The people of the United States had begun to feel as if they were unsurpassable in every aspect of life. However, the launch of Sputnik alarmed society and created a wide spread panic in suspecting that their country was vulnerable and could be outshown.

    Fidel Castro became uneasy, as to be expected, because he was a communist leader. Castro asked the Soviet Union for nuclear missiles to protect Cuba from America. Cuba is not that far away from the coasts of America, so there was this huge panic throughout our country. President Kennedy demanded that the Soviet Union take back the missiles, or Kennedy declared that America would actually invade Cuba to retrieve them himself. It was really a scary time in our country.

    In a thirty-two-month period, China successfully exploded its first atomic bomb (October 16, 1964), launched its first nuclear missile (October 25, 1966), and detonated its first hydrogen bomb (June 14, 1967. This was very scary for the United States, becasue China was a communist country, and the development of effective and detrementail atomic bombs could have posed a huge problem for our world during the Cold War.

    Soviet Red Army invades Afghanistan
    Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, invasion of Afghanistan in late December 1979 by troops from the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union intervened in support of the Afghan communist government in its conflict with anticommunist Muslim guerrillas during the Afghan War (1978–92) and remained in Afghanistan until mid-February 1989.

    East Germany allows unrestricted migration to West Germany
    East Germany lifted restrictions on emigration or travel to the West, and within hours tens of thousands of East and West Berliners swarmed across the infamous Berlin Wall for a very happy and wild celebration of freedom.
