    The Sritattvanidhi is written.
    In the early 1800s, the Sritattvanidhi (shree-tot-van-EE-dee) was written by the ruling prince of the Mysore palace of India. The writing compiled Hindu deities, music, history, meditation and yoga. Including 122 yoga poses, this was the first book documenting the physical yoga asanas.
  • Tirumalai Krishnamacharya is born.

    A true pioneer of yoga, Tirumalai Krishnamacharya devoted himself to the study of various yoga styles. The earliest writings of yoga were mainly about mantras and meditations. Krishnamacharya focused on practicing physical yoga postures (asana).

    Hatha Yoga becomes Prominent
    The term hatha means willful or forceful. Hatha yoga refers to a prearrangement of physical exercises, known as asanas or postures. The Maharaja (King) of Mysore hires Krishnamacharya to open a yoga studio and teach the royal family. Krishnamacharya then constructed a more vigorous style of hatha yoga, targeting muscle and stamina building into his mostly male disciples. This became known as Ashtanga and Vinyasa Yoga.
