    Ian MacDougall Hacking was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, February 18, 1936. Ian Hacking earned two undergraduate degrees one in 1956 and the other in 1958 and his PHD in 1962. In the summer months to pay for his education Hacking worked within the Oil business for Mobile and Shell.

    Smith's and Gregg Bury Prize
    In 1960 Ian Hacking won both the Smith's Prize in Mathematics and the Gregg Bury Prize in Theology. Both awarded by the University of Cambridge. After the reorganization in 1988 the Smith's award was now given under the name Smith-Knight and Rayleigh-Knight Prize.

    In 2009 Ian Hacking was awarded with the Holdberg International Memorial Prize by H.R.H crown Princess Mette-Marit. 2009 was the sixth time that the Holdberg Memorial Prize was awarded. The Holdberg Prize was established by the Norwegian Parliament in 2003 and awarded annually.

    Ian Hacking won the Balzan Prize November 20, 2014 for his contributions to epistemology and the philosophy of mind. Hacking did not follow the traditional path of the typical epistemologists. Hacking examined not just knowledge, but also the forms of knowing specifically mathematics and natural sciences.
