    Horace Mann was born on May fourth, 1796. Mann was born in Franklin, which is a place in Massachusetts. Mann’s father was a poor farmer and the boy’s conservative upbringing taught him to be responsible and independent. Horace had two siblings, a brother and a sister.

    Horace Mann served in the Massachusetts legislature for five years. He was the chairman of his board of trustees for the lunatic asylum at Worcester. In 1833, Horace was elected to the Massachusetts state senate. Mann was the President of the Massachusetts state senate for two years, 1836 and 1837.

    Horace Mann married a woman named Charlotte Messer. Charlotte was the daughter of the president of Brown University. This was a coincidence because Horace Mann actually attended Brown University so he probably knows her dad.

    Horace Mann’s wife died in 1832, which was only two years after they got married. Before Mann fully recovered from the grief, he married another woman named Mary Tyler Peabody in 1843. The couple joined Samuel Gridley Howe and his wife on a dual honeymoon to Europe. Mann ended up having three sons, one being Horace Mann Jr.

This placed him at the foremost rank of educators in America even though previously he had not shown any special interest in education.     In 1848, Horace Mann was elected into the U.S. congress as a Whig to fill the space provided by the death of John Quincy Adams. Mann’s first speech was about excluding slavery in the south. Mann was reelected into congress in 1853 because people liked how he was an independent anti-slavery candidate, but Mann wasn't interested in that.

    On the same day that he was nominated to be governor of Massachusetts, Horace Mann was chosen to be president of Antioch College in Yellow Springs in Ohio. Failing the election for governor, Mann accepted presidency of the college. At the college he taught economics, philosophy, and theology. Horace Mann kept teaching until death.

    So Horace Mann dies at last, but his legacy goes on to this day. Horace Mann was a very important piece in American history and now has multiple schools named after him. You can find his statue in the front of the Massachusetts state house. Mann affected the anti-slavery movement, as well as the education reform, in which we all know him from.
