History of the Atom Timeline Project by Diamond Dunbar

  • Dalton's Discovery

    Dalton's Discovery
Dalton discovered that all matter is made up of atoms and atoms are indestructable. He used research and the theroy of atomic composition. He thought that atoms were tiny and invisable, tiny, and indestructable and each one has a different size, mass, and atomic behavior.
  • Thompson's Discovery

    Thompson's Discovery
Thompsan discoved the electron on the atom. He gathered evidence from previous experiments. Thompsan thought that the atrom looked like a big solid ball and he was fomous fir his model called the Plum Pudding Model.
  • Bohr's Discovery

    Bohr's Discovery
Bohr came up with the idea of protons in the nucleus and came up with the electron cloud. he used Planck's quantum theroy to explain the stability of atoms. He thought atoms existed in set orbits around the nucleus.
  • Rutherford's Discovery

    Rutherford's Discovery
Rutherford discovered that atom consisted of subatomic particles called protons and electrons. Rutherford reasoned that if Thompsan model was correct then the mass of the atom was spread out throughout the atom using the gold foil experiment.Rutherford thought that the atom looked like planets orbting aound the sun.
  • Heisenberg's and Schrodinger's Discovery

    Heisenberg's and Schrodinger's Discovery
Schrodinger showed through math that waves can be used to decribe the electrons in atoms. He thought that electrons stuck in their orbits would set up "standing waves".
  • Aristotle 350 B.C.

Aristotle thought there was no atom from his observations. He believed that all of earth was made of wind water and fire.
  • Democritus's Discovey (400 B.C.)

    Democritus's Discovey (400 B.C.)
Democritus discovered that all matter is made up of invisible parts by using theories from obervatitions. He thought that the atom lookked like solid ball.
