    Democritus and Aristotle (460 B.C.)

Democritus believed that everything was made up of tiny particles that he named atomos. Atomos means "indivisible". Democritus believed in these small particles because if you break something in half many times there comes a point that it can no longer be broken down.

Aristotle said that Democritus' discovery was useless.
  • Dalton

    Dalton
Dalton used different chemicals in experiments that provided him with the idea that matter is made up of small particles. He concluded that all matter was made up of atoms.

  • JJ Thomson

    JJ Thomson
Thomson found the electron by conducting an experiment with cathode tubes. He beliveved that electrons are stuck to a nucleus that is positive. His model was named the "Plum Pudding" Model.

  • Rutherford

    Rutherford
Rutherford discovered the proton and believed that electrons orbited the nucleus. He shot alpha rays at gold foil for his experiment.

  • Bohr

    Bohr
Bohr decided that electrons needed rules although the rules seemed irrational. He set up the Bohr diagram showing that certain amount of electrons on each level.
