    Aristotle (B.C.)

    Aristotle (B.C.)
He thought that stuff can be broken into elemtents, elements are atoms with different masses. Aristotle did not believe in the Atom Theory. Aristotle believed that all matter was made of "The Four Elements" which are Fire, Earth, Air, and Water.

    Democritus (BC)

    Democritus (BC)
Democritus found out that if you keep breaking something into smaller pieces you will get into an atom. He was going to keep beating or breaking a tree down untill he got it to the smallest it could be.He thought a "jaggged atom" or a round ball. He thought it was could there.

  • Dalton

    Dalton
He discovered that certain gases could be incorpated in certain proportions even if different compunds shares the same element. He used experiments with chemicals "Dalton's Atomic Laws or Model." He thought the atom looked the same as Democritus's theory.

  • Thomson

    Thomson
Thomson took the idea of the atom and tried to incorporate evidence for the electrons. He used cathode rays (beams of electrons) by having the beam interacts with eletric and magnetic fields. The electrons are small and the rest is postive. It is called " plumb model."

  • Rutherford

    Rutherford
Rutherford discovered the nucleaus and identified protons. He found the first radioactive gas. He also found the positive nucleus in the atom that was surrounded by negative electrons. He used the thin sheet of gold foil "Planetray model" method.

  • Bohr

    Bohr
Bohr discovered that electrons can only have certain energies, different elements have different energies. "An atom absorbs or gives off energy (as in light or heat) the electron jumps higher or lower orbits." Bohr also discovered that the atom has a small positively charged nucleus. Electrons surrounds the nucleus and they travel around it in a circular orbit. The method he used was "stationary orbits."

  • Heisenberg and Schrodinger

    Heisenberg and Schrodinger
Heisenberg and Schrodinger discovered that electrons stuck in their orbits would set up "standing waves." He said that you can describe only the probability of where an electron could be, it was not definite. They were known for the schrodinger equation " The Wave Equation of Non Relatirestic Quantam Mechanics." He showed that waves can be used to describe electrons in atoms.
