  • First U.S. School for the Deaf

    First U.S. School for the Deaf

    The first school for the deaf was opened in Connecticut by Thomas Gallaudet. For the first time students with a disability were given the opportunity to be educated in the United States of America.   • First ID School (MA)

    First ID School (MA)

    The first public school for students with an intellectual disability was open in Massachusetts. This stepping stone marked a progress to educate students who were excluded from learning. Even though they were labeled as a public school, they were still separate from the general education system.
  • Brown v. Board

    Brown v. Board

    Brown v. Board of Education court case ruled that "separate is not equal." This case focused on race, which later on helped with the support of disability rights. The idea that students who had disability had the right to equal educational opportunity like everyone else.
  • Section 504

    Section 504

    Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act was made so that person can't discriminate against students who have disabilities in schools. The Act required schools to provide any accommodation necessary in order for students to learn. This law in fact helped students with disabilities to not be separated but rather placed within regular classrooms.
  • EAHCA (Public Law 94-142)

    EAHCA (Public Law 94-142)

    The Education for All Handicapped Children Act is a law that requires all public schools to educate all children that has a disability. This Act also introduce the LRE - Least Restrictive Environment. This means that they should be taught in the same classroom with non disabled students when possible.
