    Due to the large amount of Cuban immigrants in Miami a public school is created to educate the children. This is important because it showed that as a country we were beginning to understand that all children deserved an education.
  • 1964- Civil Rights Act

    The Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination based on race, sex, color, religion or national origin. This might be one of the most important events in the past 50 years in terms of multicultural education. It set the groundwork for children of all races to attend school and get a proper education.

    1966- The Equality of Education Opportunity Study
    The Equality of Education Opportunity Study concluded that African American children benefited from attending desegregated schools. This led to the concept of bussing.

    In 2002 this law was replaced by the "No Child Left Behind Act." This law allowed children to get an education despite not being proficient in English.

    This law met the needs of American Indian and Alaska Native children within the classroom. This is important because it showed that as a country we were paying attention to all children and making sure that their needs were met within the classroom so that they could receive a proper education.

    This law prohibits the discrimination of gender in education. This is very important because it allowed female students to have the same opportunity as male students.
  • 1974- Busing in Boston

    1974- Busing in Boston
    In 1974 Federal Judge Arthur Garrity ordered the busing of African American children from their Boston neighborhoods to the schools of predominately white Boston neighborhoods. This was met with much protest within the white Boston neighborhoods but was important in the process of creating equal opportunities for students across the country.

    The Equal Education Opportunities Act prohibits discrimination and requires all schools to overcome any obstacle that might prevent equality for students. This is very important because it required schools to not just acknowledge that every student deserves the same opportunities but actually make it possible for the students.

    1975- National Association of Bilingual Education is founded
    This association provides a lot of programs to ensure that bilingual students are able to receive the same education as students whose first language is English.
  • 1995- Georgia offers universal preschool

    1995- Georgia offers universal preschool
    In 1995 Georgia became the first state to offer universal preschool to children. This is important because it allows children to have the opportunity to transition into school and not just jump right into it.
