    Before any film was ever though about, a bet was made. A $25,000 bet was made over whether a galloping horse had all four feet off of the ground at some point whenever it ran. For proof they took a sequence of photos and developed them, thus settling the bet.
  • Start of public film

    During this decade films were just being released publicly. Also, a theatre was build in Philadelphia, including multiple film studios that were created around the country.
  • Kinetiscope

    The kinetoscope was the first motion picture device. It rapidly took photos and lit them up to show a picture " moving ". this was the first real projector of the time.
  • First Western - The Great Train Robbery

    First Western - The Great Train Robbery
    Thomas Edison's film corporation produced the first ever western. This film gave the basics of what a film needed and included shots and editing. With this film came the growing popularity of story films.
  • First feature-length talkie- The Jazz Singer

    First feature-length talkie- The Jazz Singer
    the film had lip sync with the speaking and singing in some occasions. This ended the silent film era and ultimately gave a new genre to film.
  • Technicolor is introduced

    Technicolor is introduced
    This coloration was extremely bright and showed deep shadow detail. This was taking over two color film which had been used since 1922. Over time this transitioned into a much smoother film. This is also used in some animated films
  • Wide screens & 3-D movies

    Wide screens & 3-D movies
    Since Television was created, film needed a way to stay relevant. To do this, widescreen processes were created. Also, 3-D movies were beginning to be made through stereoscopic technology.
  • Movie ratings

    Movie ratings
    Movie ratings were introduced during this year and were given to give the viewers a face description. Ratings were based on the content the movie had such as cursing gore, or crudeness.
  • Introduction of Steady-cam

    Introduction of Steady-cam
    Steady-cams mainly mechanically isolate movement. This allows a smooth shot, even when the camera moves over an irregular surface. This was first used in the legendary Rocky movie
  • Toy Story- first feature-length animated film

    Toy Story- first feature-length  animated film
    This film was entirely computer animated. This film was the highest grossing on its opening weekend. It is considered one of the best animated films every made.
