    Pleading act of English

    The English language becomes the official language of the courts - after Edward III addressed this to parliament.

    The Invention of the Printing Press

    Created by Wiliam Caxton.
    Latin words started to enter the English Language once more, with words such as conspiracy, popular, solar and ornate.
    Scottish English began to have a distinct dialect and created new words like pinkie, aye, brae and burn.

    The Renaissance

    It was a time for inventions for new words as writers couldn't find appropriate terms: new terms came into use here, under new terms such as archer, appetite, buckt, certain, clergy and story.
  • The Colonisation of the New World

    American English loaned words from Indian languages as well as immigrant groups.
  • King James Bible published.

    The King James Bible was published, which influenced English speech and writing - even now, at the present day.
  • The Age of Lexicographer

    The lexicography [1600 - 1800] craze came from Nathaniel Bailey's "Universal Eymological English Dictionary" led to more dictionaries being printed like Samuel Johnson's "Dictionary of the English Language" These dictionaries expanded the lexis within the England and influenced the education in UK and USA.
  • Universal Etymological Dictionary

    Published by Nathaniel Bailey - it started to the craze for the dictionaries.
  • Dictionary of the English Language

    Published by Samuel Johnson, in 1755, it continued the craze for the lexicography.
  • The Industrial Revolution

    There was a frantic need for lexis to be learnt in order to describe developments and science and technology. New terms came into use such as ethnology, carcinology, caffeine, electron, apatite and beri beri.

    Was published by Robert Lowth in 1762 and influeneced education in English speaking nations such as UK and USA.
  • English Grammar book

    Written by Lindley Murrary this also influenced education and alot of her work became standard words.
  • American Dictionary of the English Language

    In America, Noah Webster wrote "American Dictionary of the English Language" to define the itentity of the new nation.
  • BBC Established

    The BBC is established in 1922 and reaches across Britain, using the standard English lexis.
  • Oxford Dictionary Published

    The first official Oxford Dictionary was published - showing all of the official words of the English Language.
  • Present Day English Goes Global

    In the Twentieth century, Engilsh emerged as a world language and therefore variations of their words. Due to the expansion of the language, more words have entered throughout the 20th and 21st centuries such as supermarket, chav, sudoku, alcopop, ceasefire and microchip.
  • The Anglo Saxon Invasion

    During the Anglo Saxon Invasion, words were borrowed from Latin such as candle, cucumber, elephant, street and wine.

    1800 Scandinavian words came into the English Language such as awkward, freckle, scowl, sister, weak and widow and the Germanic language.
