    Democritus

    • Democritus was an ancient Greek philosopher who lived from 460BC - 370BC. Democritus claimed that everything was made from atoms. These atoms are physically, but not geometrical. They are invisible and between them lies no empty space. They will always be there and are indestructible.
  • Isaac Newton

Isaac Newton was an English scientist land was born in 1704. Newton Studied gases and the possibility of atoms existing. He Believed that there were tiny pieces of mass that were ‘swimming everywhere.
  • John Dalton

Dalton was born on the 6th of December 1766 in England. He discovered that elements are made up of extremely small particles called atoms. Atoms cannot be subdivided, created or destroyed. Atoms of different elements combine in simple whole- number ratios to form chemical compounds.
  • Michael Faraday

Faraday was an English scientist who was born in 1791. Faraday made one of the most significant discoveries that led to the idea that atoms had an electrical component. He discovered this by placing two opposite electrodes in a solution of water containing a dissolved compound. It was clear to Faraday that electrical forces were responsible fro the joining of atoms in compounds
  • George Johnstone Stoney

George Johnstone Stoney was born in 1826. He discovered the electron. He gave us the understanding of negative charge.
  • James Clerk Maxwell

Maxwell was a scottish scientist born in 1831. He discovered the theory of electromagnetism and he made electric and magnetic fields
  • Mark Planck

Mark Planck was born in 1858. He Revolutionised our understanding of atomic and subatomic processes.
  • Hanatora Nagaota

Hanatora Nagota was born in 1865. He created a slightly incorrect model of an atom based on solar system and helped with understanding of structure of an atom
  • Henry Gwyn- Jeffrey Moseley

He was born in 1868 in United States. He is known for rearranging the periodic table according to atomic number rather than atomic weight.
  • Robert Millikan

He was born in 1868. Miliken is known for Milliken the 'oil drop experiment’ this successfully measured the charge of a single atom. This allowed us to measure the charge to mass ratio of an electron.
  • Ernest Rutherford

Ernest Rutherford was born in 1871 in New Zealand. He discovered that Electrons orbit a positively charged nucleus like planets move around the sun
  • Neils Bohr

Neils Bohr was a Danish Physicist born in 1885. Bohr helped with the understanding of the structure and properties of atoms.
  • Erwin Schrodinger

Erwin Schrodinger Was born in 1887 .He made important contributions to the development of Quantum Mechanics and received a Nobel prize in 1933.
  • James Chadwick

He was born in 1891 in England. He discovered the neutron and discovered the negative charge in atoms
  • Aristotle

Aristotle was an Ancient Greek philospher wo lived from 38BC - 322BC. Aristotle is known for making a generalisation off all matter being made up of 4 elements fire, water, earth and air. He also believed that these elements had 4 qualities that were dryness, hotness, coldness and moistness.
