Putnam was born the only child of Samuel and Riva Putnam on July 31, 1926.

Putnam studied at the University of Pennsylvania, attended graduate school at Harvard and University of California. He finally obtained a Ph.D in 1951.

After getting his Ph.D Putnam taught for several years at several different places. Once he was done with that he joined the philosophy department at Harvard in 1976.
