Mary Shelley was born in London, England. She was the daughter of philosopher and political writer William Godwin and famed feminist Mary Wollstonecraft.

Mary didn't go to school but she made great use of her father's library. Mary was often reading and writing.

In summer, the Shelleys travelled to Switzerland with a group of writers, including Lord Byron. The group entertained themselves by reading ghost stories. Lord Byron suggested that they all should try writing their own horror story. Mary Shelley began work on her most famous novel, Frankenstein.
