Helen Longino was born on July 13, 1944.

She received her Bachelor's degree in English Literature from Barnard College in 1966.

She next completed her Masters degree in Philosophy from the University of Sussex in 1967

She then received her PhD under the guidance of Peter Achinstein from Johns Hopkins University in 1973. Her dissertation was on Interference and Scientific Discovery.

Dr. Longino has concentrated on the social aspects of scientific knowledge. She also examines the feminist point of view in science. She published Science as Social Knowledge in 1990. In this book she highlights social values in scientific knowledge.
