In 1972 Milk was going through a “hippie” stage. He wore his hair in a ponytail, and smoked marijuana. Milk owned a camera shop with his partner Scott Smith on Castro Street, the heart of the gay community. He had no interests in electoral politics, and generally kept his beliefs to himself. However, as times changed so did Milk. He gained much more political interest.
