    Attends Einstein's Lectures

    While in Berlin, Hans Reichenbach attends Albert Einstein's lectures on the theory of relativity. In fact, he was one of 5 people to attend his first lecture in 1917. It is at this point that he chooses to focus his own philosophical research on the Theory of Relativity as well. in 1920 he published his first book on the subject, The Theory of Relativity and A Priori Knowledge, which explored the philosophical impacts of the Theory.
  • Began Teaching at the University of Berlin

    Began Teaching at the University of Berlin
    In 1926, Hans Reichenbach became a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Berlin. He taught in a more Socratic method, encouraging questions and debate. This was very unique in Germany at the time. Throughout this time period, Hans Reichenbach published many essays and articles, all in German. A complete list of his published works can be found HERE
  • Emigration to Turkey

    When Hitler came into power in 1933, Hans knew he had to leave. He had Jewish grandparents, and was know for being politically active in his days as a student. He became head of the Department of Philosophy at the University at Istanbul and served in that role from 1933 to 1938.
  • Moved to the United States

    In 1938, he moved to the United States, and began teaching philosophy at UCLA. During this period, he began publishing major works in English.
  • Death and Posthumous Works

    At the time of his death in 1953, Hans Reichenbach was working on two books: Nomological statements and admissible operations (1954), and The direction of time (1956). These were published posthumously thanks to his wife, Dr. Maria Reichenbach.
