  • Washington's Suit

    George Washington wore a suit of brown broadcloth with buttons. He also wore white silk stockings, silver shoe buckles, and a dress sword.
  • Ringing Bells 9:00 AM

    All in New York City church bells ring for half an hour
  • Arriving at the Senate Chamber 1:00 PM

    Arrives at the Federal Hall thirty minutes later. George Washington proceeds to the Senate chamber where the two houses of congress awaited for their new head of state.
  • Taking the Oath 2:00 PM

    Adams informed the President that both houses were ready to attend Washington was escorted to the balcony in front of the Senate chamber. He took the oath with his hand on the bible and kissed the bible after the oath. He bowed to the crowd and retired to the Senate chamber.
  • Washington's First Inaugural Address

    George Washington proceeded into the Senate chamber to deliver his First Inaugural Address. Washington was visibly nervous, spoke in a quiet voice, and maintained nervous.
  • Divine Service at St. Paul's Mid-Afternoon

    In mid-afternoon, the party proceeds to St.Paul's chapel in New York. New York's leads the celebration of Divine Service. Christian hymn of praise is sung by the attenedes.
  • Dinner Alone at the Presidential Mansion

    After the church service, Washington was escorted in a carriage to the Franklin House where he dined alone.
  • Fireworks and Illuminations Evening

    In New York City the skies were filled with fireworks that evening. Washington, with his aides, watched the show from the homes.
  • New President Walks Home 10:00 PM

    Washington then wants to go home so he gets into is carriage, along with his entourage, proceeding to retire to his residence at Franklin House. So many people were out that night celebrating the new president. They were escorted and some walked home.
