The monster killed william because he was a family member of his enemy, victor. Initially the monster wanted to kidnap william and raise him to have as a companion. The when the monster heard his enemies name he killed him so that he could test if his enemy was invulnerable or not

The cottagers realize that the monster is the one that has been helping them and they move away in order to escape the horror that they saw leaving the monster to feel even more isolated. page 131
