Brown V. Board of Education of Topeka

In the landmark supreme court case Brown V. Board Of Education of Topeka, the supreme court promoted greater racial equality by ruling for the integration of African Americans into the White education system. The reasoning was that schools were separate but were not equal. African Americans did not receive the same level of education as Whites did.

The Vietnam War Begins

The war began when North Vietnam attacked South Vietnam. The U.S intervened in the war because of the Domino Theory, which theorized that if South Vietnam were to fall to Communist North Vietnam, the neighboring countries of Vietnam would also fall to Communism. The Domino Theory is an extension of the policy of containment. The U.S lost the Vietnam War, and Vietnam united under Communist rule. The war ended on April 30, 1975.

The Launch of Sputnik
Sputnik was the first ever satellite to be launched into space, and it was launched by the Soviet Union. The launch of Sputnik by the Soviet Union spurred to U.S to catch up in the Cold War space competition. The National Defense Education Act was passed, which funded millions of dollars to Colleges and Universities to catch up to the scientific and technological advancement of the Soviet Union. -
March On Washington; Martin Luther King Jr. Delivers His "I Have a Dream Speech"

The March On Washington combatted racial discrimination. It was a march for equality for African Americans. 250,000 people marched to the Lincoln Memorial to demand the end of Jim crow and pass new legislation that improves the employment rate of African Americans. MLK also gave his famous Speech, "I Have a Dream," in which he calls for the end of racial discrimination in the U.S and for African American civil and economic rights.

The Black Panther Party
The Black Panther Party was created by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. The Black Panther Party is dedicated to protecting African Americans from police brutality. The Black Panther Party were influenced by the ideas of Malcolm X. The Black Panther Party believed and encouraged African Americans to use self-defense to protect themselves. -
Stonewall Inn Riots
(Key concept 8.2 II A)
The Stonewall Inn Riot symbolizes the start for Gay and lesbian social equality. It began when the police raided the bar with the intent to rid of the gays and lesbians in the bar. The gays and lesbians did not allow police harassment and social discrimination and fought back against the police. The Stonewall Inn riot spurred the gay rights movement by spurring on new gay rights organizations to form.

Kent State University Killings
(Key concept 8.1 II B)
After the news about the U.S attacking neutral Cambodia became public antiwar protests became more numerous. College campuses were outraged and they protested against the U.S participating in the Vietnam War. 4 students at Kent State University were shot and killed by members of the Ohio National Guard. This was the first time students died during a peaceful protest.

Watergate Scandal

The Watergate Scandal caused the public to lose trust in the government. 5 men were caught for trying to break into the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee. Nixon denied that he was involved in the Watergate Scandal, but Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward exposed Nixon's involvement. Nixon was going to be impeached, but he resigned before he was impeached because he knew he was going to be convicted.

Camp David Accords
The Camp David Accords is considered an accomplishment for Carter's presidency. President Carter invited the Egyptian president, Anwar Sadat, and the Israeli Prime Minister Menachem to Camp David to negotiate a peace treaty. The three of them negotiated for 13 days and emerged with a peace treaty between Isreal and Egypt, ending hostilities between the two countries. Jimmy Carter ended tensions between Egypt and Israel. -
Three Mile Island Nuclear Incident

During the Three Mile Island nuclear incident, a nuclear plant near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania had a reactor that almost had a meltdown. After the incident, no new nuclear plants were created. When the nuclear plant almost had a meltdown, this helped the environmentalist movement, as they used this incident to promote their platform.

Iran Contra Affair

President Reagan ordered the CIA to aid the Contras to overthrow the Sandinistas in Nicaragua. This was seen as Reagan assumpting war powers that belonged to Congress. Congress ruled that all government agencies could not aid the Contras. Oliver North broke this ruling and aided the Contras by using the profits from the Iranian arms deal. When this became public, North became prosecuted and Reagan was weakened domestically.

Collapse of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe
The collapse of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe was symbolized by the fall of the Berlin Wall. Mass public protests were weakening the government in Poland and East Germany, and it was clear that the Soviet Union was not about to intervene. These mass public protests eventually led to the fall of the Berlin Wall, ending the separation of West and East Berlin. -
