    Two French brothers invent the cinematograph and show the first screening. At first they were very private as to keep the new technology from being stolen. Their films were ostly "actuality" films which showed things like workers leaving a factory.

    Film started with a bet that a horses hooves are all off the ground at full speed. it was a 25,000 bet and Edward Mybridge won. They took shots at every second to catch the horses movement, when the played all the photos consecutively it appeared to be moving.

    The Great Train Robbery was a movie directed by Edwin Porter, it was a silent, 12 minutes long western film. It was a milestone at its time for its time. Some very innovative techniques were first used in this movie such as coloring, composite editing, cross cutting, and on scene shooting .

    Thomas Edison created the MPPC as a monopoly for film. They would hurt other film producers trying to make movies. It ended the domain of foreign films in America. It increased the quality of iflm production by internal competition.

    Movies moved to california for the good lighting because New York was very dreary. Also other film makers would escape to Mexico to avoid Thomas Edison because California was close to Mexico.

    This era brought sound to the film industry. But this also created a tension for film making because of the growth in cost of the expensive equipment for sound films. Also, because of that, Film quality lacked for some time until the mid 1930s.

    1895 first movie theatre, the “kinetoscope parlor” where images would move, not film. Thomas Edison created It for only an audience of one. Two frenchman unveil to projector to thus, then make a movie theatre. Small theatre called a “vaudville” would show a short screened movie eventually being called a nickleodeon.
