    Ellen Swallow Richards

    Pioneer in the field of home economics who helped open the door for women to pursue science educations and careers. She went to MIT, until they refused to allow her to pursue a doctorate.

    Was the first to conduct studies on food analysis, dietary evaluations, and energy requirements for work.
  • Morrill Act 1862

    Act that gave each state federal land to have a college. The college must foster research and instruction of practical efforts (agriculture, mechanics, etc)

    Martha Van Rensselaer

    Started home economics department at Cornell. Was the president of the American Home Economics Association (1914-1916).

    Caroline Hunt

    First home economics professor at the University of Wisconsin. She believed home economics ought to provide general and interdisciplinary education.

    Arkansas Land Grant Schools

    University of Arkansas (Fayetteville)- part of Morrill Act of 1862
    Was founded in 1871 for Agriculture
    University of Arkansas (Pine Bluff)- part of Morrill Act of 1890
    Was founded in 1873 for agriculture and home economics
  • Morrill Act 1890

    Forbid racial discrimination in land grant universities (universities receiving federal funding). They also if necessary were given separate funds to make a land grant school for “people of color”.
  • Rumford Kitchen

    Built by Ellen Richards and named after Count Rumford (the first to label nutrient values on food). The kitchen gave recipes and nutritional information about food served in it.
  • American Home Economics Association

    Founded in 1909 by Ellen Richards, now known as the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.
  • Smith-Lever Act 1914

    Established national cooperative extension service that extends outreach programs to educate rural Americans.
  • Smith-Hughes Act 1917

    Promot d vocational education in agriculture, trades, industry, and homemaking.
  • Future Homemakers of America (FHA)

    Founded at the meeting in Chicago, Illinois.
  • Vocational Education Act 1963

    Offer new and expanded vocational education programs, bringing job training to the industry.
  • Vocational Education Amendment of 1968

    Extends work of 1963 act but changes the emphasis from the occupation to the people doing them.
  • Vocational Ammendment of 1972 (Title IX)

    Federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity.
  • Vocational Education Amendment 1976

    Assured to support vocational education in junior high school, and remove any bias on people allowed in the programs.
  • Carl D. Perkins Vocational Act of 1984

    Amends the Act of 1963 in order to strengthen and expand the economic base of the nation by updating high quality programs and vocational technology education.
  • Carls Perkins Act 1990

    Retitled the original act to be “Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Applied Technology Education Act”. Reauthorizing it for the fiscal year
  • FHA changed to FCCLA

    Name changed to Family, Career, Community Leaders of America at the national conference.
  • Carl’s Perkins Act 2006

    Increased focus on the academic achievement of career and technical education students, enhancing the connection between secondary and post secondary education.
