When a girl started to wear her hair up, she also started to wear a white cap over it most of the time. People didn't wash their hair as often as we do now, so wearing a cap helped keep hair cleaner longer and hid greasy-looking hair. Caps were considered quite stylish. Some had ruffles and/or lace. When a lady was home with no visitors, or if she was going to a fancy party or ball, she could take her cap off.
