    Fitzgerald was raised primarily in New York state. He attended Princeton University but he dropped out in 1917 to join the United States Army during World War I.

    F. Scott Fitzgerald was an American writer of the Lost Generation who rose to fame with his second novel, The Beautiful and Damned (1922). During this period, he cultivated friendships with some writers and artists in Europe. His third novel, The Great Gatsby (1925), was a commercial failure, but was later recognised as the "Great American Novel". Following his wife's mental health and his admission to a mental institution, Fitzgerald completed his last novel, Tender Is the Night (1934).

    To cope with financial difficulties, he moved to Hollywood. There he tried to build a career as a screenwriter, without success. During this time, he lived with Sheilah Graham. He became a sovereign after a long struggle with alcoholism, but died of a heart attack at 44. His friend Edmund Wilson edited and published his fifth unfinished novel, The Last Tycoon. A new edition, The Last Tycoon's Love, was published in 1993 by Matthew J. Bruccoli.
