Events of the Cold War

  • The Truman Doctorine

    The Truman Doctorine
The Truman Doctorine was a speech made by President Truman that stated that the U.S. would provide economic and military aid for countries that weren't as stable. These countries were Greece and Turkey. He wanted to give aid to these countries so that Communists' wouldn't take over these European countries. This was important to the Cold War because both the U.S. and the Soviet Union were trying to spread their economic and political views to other countries.
  • The Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan
The U.S. secretary of state, General George Marshall, wanted to provide aid to all European countries that needed it. European countries were having a tough time with unemployment and poverty, they just didn't have a stable government. This plan helped them out economically, but the Soviet Union wouldn't take any aid from the U.S. because the Soviets knew the U.S. would want something in return. This is important because the U.S. helped the countries improve economically and industrially.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
The Berlin Airlift was put into place when the Soviet Union blocked off all the railroads and highways to get into Germany. Blocking off these main transportation systems made Germany go through a starvation because there was no way that food or water supply could come in. Therefore, the Americans and British officials flew food and supplies using airplanes into West Berlin. This is important because West Berlin survived because of the airlift and this made the respect for the Soviet Union drop.
  • Creation of NATO

    Creation of NATO
This was a defensive military alliance that involved ten Western European nation, the U.S., and Canada. This treaty stated that if one country one attack another of this organization, that this would mean an attack on all. This was the first time that the U.S. got involved with other countries during peacetime during the Cold War. This is important because the the U.S. is now getting apart of other nations affairs because of the Cold War.
  • Rosenberg Spy Case

    Rosenberg Spy Case
Ethel and Julius Rosenberg were executed for spying on Americans that were making an atomic bomb and telling the Soviet Union about how the bomb is. The Rosenbergs denied the charges and also plead the fifth. They were proven guilty and given the death penalty. This is important because there was a lot of spy cases during the Cold War, but this was by far the worse and got one of the worse charges-the death penelty.
  • The Korean War

    The Korean War
This war started with North Korea invading South Korea because each countries government wanted to rule all of Korea. Truman helped South Korea by giving them naval and air support. Many of nations sent troops to help South Korea to defend them. The U.S. then got involved with the Korean War and defended South Korea. The boundaries went back to what they were before the war started, after the war. This is important because this is when the Cold War started to actually heat up.
  • Creation of the Warsaw Pact

    Creation of the Warsaw Pact
Just like how the U.S. created NATO, the Soviet Union then created the Warsaw Pact with other Eastern European that were under the Soviet's control. This meant that the Soviet Union would now have a military with other nations. This was important because it's not just the U.S. that has a military with other nations, now their enemy during this war, has a military with other European nations.
  • The Vietnam War

    The Vietnam War
This war dragged out for over 19 years and was one of the worse wars of the Cold War. There was guerrila war fought and this was fighting about communism. North Vietnam was supported by communist allies, and the south was supported by the U.S. and other anti-communist nations. This was important because it was one of the longest wars ever fought and this war was communists fighting against the anti-communist, which the U.S. didn't want any more Communist countries.
  • Bay of Pigs

    Bay of Pigs
This was an unsuccessful invasion that the U.S. did on Cuba. The U.S. wanted to try to stop communism from spreading into the U.S. The U.S. sent a group of Cubans into Cuba to invade and also used a lot of propaganda during this time. They used a lot of propaganda to try to stop Communism. This was important because the Cold War was about propaganda and this invasion was about propaganda a lot. Also, this invasion was very unsuccessful for the U.S. and not planned out fully.
  • Berlin Wall Goes Up

    Berlin Wall Goes Up
The Soviet Union put up a wall dividing East Berlin from the West because the Soviet Union controlled East Germany and the Soviets were not argreeing with the U.S. or West Germany and threatened to sign a peace treaty with East Germany. The Soviets then put up a wall which destroyed families because families got split up and this really made people angry. This is important because the Berlin Wall became the symbol of the Cold War and this was huge how it seperated East and West Berlin.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
This crisis was the closest the world has ever came to dealing with a nuclear war. The Soviets threatened that they would defend Cuba by using battlefield nuclear weapons if the U.S. invaded Cuba. The Soviets put missiles on Cuba aiming towards the U.S. This crisis ended in them coming to an agreement. The Soviets said they would remove the missiles if the U.S. didn't invade. This is important because this was almost a nuclear war and they actually came to an agreement at the end.
  • U.S. sends man to the moon

U.S. sends man to the moon
The U.S. and the Soviet Union was having a "space race" to get one of their men to the moon. The U.S. won that competition when they sent Neil Armstrong to the moon and he actually walked on it. This was one of the only men to ever get to the moon ever. This was important because the U.S. actually was successful with making a well-put-together spaceship and getting the technology to actually send a man to the moon!
  • Nixon visits China

    Nixon visits China
President Nixon went and visited the People's Republic of China and met with Mao Zedong. This was the first step in gaining back a stable relationship with China since the fight that broke out in China and the Korean War. This is important because Nixon was the first to break off any tension between China and also ended 25 years of seperation between the two sides.
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    Fall of the Berlin Wall
Many of people attempted to climb the wall to get over to the other side, but it wasn't easy at all.Communism began to weaken and the East Germany government announced that the borders of the wall were open, people could cross through from both sides. Many of people didn't believe it.After awhile, the wall was taken down completely, but some people still have parts of it for memorises. This is important because after the wall came down Germany became a whole state. The wall will always be remembered.
  • The Collapse of the Soviet Union

The Collapse of the Soviet Union
The collapse of the Soviet Union ended the Cold War and the Soviet Union then divided into 15 seperate countries. The Soviet Union collapsed because many countries became anti-communist and also the Soviet Union didn't have enough money to provide to their military anymore. There economy and some invasions also led to the collapse. This is important because the collapse made other nations change their ways politically, economically, and military so they didn't collapse as well.
