Ernst Waldried Josef Wenzel Mach was born on February 18, 1838, in Moriva, Czech Republic but his family moved a couple years later to Untersiebenbrunn, Austria. He attended the University of Vienna study multiple subjects like physics, philosophy, and math and eventually earned his doctorate in physics in 1860. He married Ludovica Marussig and have 5 children. Ernst passed away a day after his 78th birthday on 19 February 1916 in a town named Vaterstetten, Germany.

Ernst Creation to Prove the Doppler Effect
Ernst created a six-foot tube with a whistle at one end was mounted so as to rotate in a vertical plane. When the listener stood in the plane of the axis of rotation no changes in pitch could be heard. But if the observer stood in the plane of rotation, fluctuations in pitch that corresponded to the speed of rotation could be heard (Pojman, P).

1845 Ernst Demonstrated the Doppler Effect was real
Ernst Mach had many contributions to Science that were key. His first important contribution was in 1845 when he helped Christian Doppler with his discovery on the Doppler Theory. Physicists Joseph Petzval and Anders Jonas Ångström argued with Doppler and his theory. Mach devised a simple apparatus that demonstrated that the Doppler effect was real, at least for sound (Pojman, P).

Even with this apparatus that Ernst made to help prove the Doppler Effect, the theory was still questioned by other physicalists regarding with light. Overall, this set of events helped Ernst to realize the study of a star’s spectrum is a possibility and he was recognized as one of the first few physicists to undertand its evolution.
