Ernst was homeschool till the age of 14 when he attended Gymnasium high school for 3 years. Entered the University of Vienna at the age of 17 in 1855.

Ernst received his doctorate in physics in 1860 and started teaching mechanics and physics in Vienna until 1864.

Ernst Mach became a professor of mathematics at the University of Graz. He considered himself a physicist, while he discovered the physiological phenomenon called Mach bands.

In 1867 Ernst decided to leave Graz to become a professor of experimental physics at Charles University where he stayed for the next 28 years.

Between the times of 1873 and 1893 Ernst did a lot of studying and experimenting, devoloping optical and photographic techniques for the measurment of sound waves and wave propogation.

In 1887 Ernst established the principles of supersonics and the Mach number, which is the ratio of the velocity of an object to the velocity of sound.

Ernst returned to the University of Vienna as a professor of inductive philosofy, suffered a stroke 2 years later and retired from research in 1901.
