    Ernst Mach 1838-1916

  • Introduction to Science

Ernst's father was the first to introduce him to science. Teaching him the existence of air and the nature of air pressure, peaking his interest in science.
  • University of Vienna

Ernst entered into the University of Vienna, where he started his studies in Mathematics and Physics.
  • Doctorate

Ernst, received his doctorate in physics hoping to study under Physicist Franz Nuemann (1795-1895), but was unable to due to lack of finances.
  • First working apparatus

Shortly after receiving his doctorate, Ernst developed an apparatus that helped proved Christian Doppler's "Doppler Effect" regarding to sound, showing that "change in pitch varied, only with the direction and speed of the sound source, given a stationary listener."
  • Chair of Mathematics

Ernst was appointed the Chair of Mathematics at the University of Graz, at a time when he most needed it, as he was struggling still with finances and doubts that he would ever succeed.
  • Period: to

    Publishings

During 1864-1867 Mach, published 3 books and 27 articles. One of Mach's most significant scientific discoveries during this time was the Mach Bands, the psychological phenomena of "illusory dark and bright bars seen at the foot and knee of a luminance trapezoid".

  • From Mathematics to Physics

During his tenure as Chair of Mathematics and not publishing an articles on Mathematics but having many in physics and physics based topics, an opening arose for Ernst to take the Chair of Physics which he did so promptly.
  • Chair of Experimental Physics

Ernst took the position of Chair of Experimental Physics at Charles University, Prague where he would stay for 28 years.
  • Non-Acuostic Function

Mach and physician Josef Breuer had discovered human balance was controlled by a non-acoustic function within the inner ear.

  • Mach Principle and Oblique Effect

Along his view of mechanics, Mach came up with the Mach Principle. This regarding the way that we see things and how inertia and gravity is seen. Again in the same book he reviewed the Oblique Effect, which he saw as being an optical illusion played on us by our eyes. https://youtu.be/MlJpIMD0vvQ
  • Science of mechanics

    Science of mechanics
Ernst Mach published The Science of Mechanics. This is a book in regards to the physical sciences in mechanics rather than the mathematical.

  • Analysis of Sensations

Analysis of Sensations, was published by Mach regarding the senses and the psycho-physics of how we perceive them.
  • The Death

Ernst Mach, died of heart disease leaving a legacy that will forever impact the world and how we view science.
