Ernst Mach studied Newton's law of inertia and often criticized it. However, it led Mach to his own conclusion that all of the mass in the universe were connected somehow. This led Ernst to proposing the physical principle. Also known as the Mach Principle. This principle would later inspire Einstein in his own work.

Einstein cited, "E. Mach recognized it most clearly of all, and because of this objection he claimed that mechanics must be placed on a new basis. It can only be got rid of by means of a physics which is conformable to the general principle of relativity, since the equations of such a theory hold for everybody of reference, whatever may be its state of motion." The term Mach's Principle was first used by Albert Einstein in 1918. He referenced this to Mach's proposal that an objects inertial mass is the direct result of the relationship of all the matter in the known universe. Einstein used Mach's principle to guide him when developing his theory of general relativity.
