"Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card

  • Third

    Third
In this chapter, Ender is 6 years old. He has just gotten his monitor removed from the back of his neck. Now, with the monitor gone, a group of bullies finally feel safe enough to attack him. In self defense, Ender fights back and the leader of the group, Stilson, ends up on the ground, defeated. This is when Ender begins wondering if he's not just like his cruel older brother, Peter.
  • Battle School

    Battle School
At the end of chapter 3, Ender decides to attend Battle School. This is where most of the action actually begins. After this comes all the training, and the war, and all that fun stuff. However, going to Battle School means that he will have to leave behind his sister, Valentine. And, for him, that was very hard.
  • Salamander Army

    Salamander Army
Ender is now about 6 years and 9 months old. He has just been promoted from being a Launchie to being a member of the Salamander Army. This is amazing for his age, since the second youngest member on this team is 8. Most of them, however, are 10 or 11. Everything seems to be against Ender, especially his commander, Bonzo.
  • Learning Leadership

    Learning Leadership
In chapter 7, Ender figures out a way to teach himself. His commander refuses to allow him to practice or fight with the rest of the army, so he gets another member of the army, a girl named Petra, to teach him what they're learning. He learns by watching the team practice, and then he practice during free time in the evening with the Launchies. This gives him some practice in leadership, and helps him improve on his own phsyical abilities.
  • Transfer

    Transfer
Ender has finally been traded from the Salamandar Army to the Rat Army. He's relieved, but once he gets to the Rat Army's quarters, he's disappointed. His new commander, Rose, isn't a very good leader, and the army's quarters are different then he's used to. But he has a good toon leader, and he's determined to work hard.
  • Seed of Doubt

    Seed of Doubt
After talking to his toon leader, Dink, Ender learns Dink doesn't believe there is an bugger war coming. Dink sees the teachers as the enemy. Ender still believes the buggers and the invasions are real, but a seed of doubt had been planted. And because of that seed of doubt, Ender begins to listen more carefully. He beccomes wiser.
  • Trouble With Russia

    Trouble With Russia
It has just been discovered that, after the war with the buggers is won, there is going to be a war with Russia. This is worrying a lot of people, especially government officials. Some are starting to wonder if they should even try to win the war with the buggers. If they don't, then the Russians will be killed, too. But if they win the war, they'll be vulnerable and an easier target for the Russians.
  • Valentine

    Valentine
This is the night after Ender receives the letter from Valentine. At least, he's told it's from Valentine. He knows, however, that the teachers have either written the letter or made Valentine write it. That night, he has a dream about Valentine and when he wakes up, he knows that Valentine is the only one he can fully trust or even love. He knows she will always be with him.
  • Dragon Army

    Dragon Army
At 9 years old, Ender has been given his own army to train; the Dragon Army. Now, Ender is a commander and, as such, he has lot to prove. Especially since all of his soldiers are either fresh out from being Launchies, or have only been fighting for 18 months, and none of them are very good.
  • Realizations

    Realizations
As Ender learns how to lead an entire army, he realizes why the teachers did what they did. They made sure that Ender was isolated from the other kids, and that made Ender's life at the Battle School a lot harder than it needed to be. This is when Ender understands that his isolation was meant to help him prove he was actually better than everyone.
  • "I am only what I remember"

"I am only what I remember"
After practically losing his best friend Alai, Ender spends the night remembering precious moments with Alai, and with his own sister Valentine, as well. Ender comes to the conclusion that he is only what he remembers. I think that's an interesting comment, because it's true. Our friends and family will leave us, but their memory never has to. Those memories can stay with us forever.
  • Graduation

    Graduation
Ender is currently 10 years old, and he is graduating Battle School. Normally, that doesn't happen until the kid in question is at least 12 or 13. And, he is going straight into Command School. Kids don't get accepted into that school until they're at least 16. So this is important, because they're really trying to speed up his education, for one, so they can get him into the war earlier. But he's also graduating because he's done so well in battles, and battle command and strategy.
  • Murder?

    Murder?
This is the point in the story where the readers find out that those two kids Ender fought in self-defense weren't just hospitalized or left the school - Ender killed them. This makes the readers wonder if Ender is really a killer, and thus starts all the discussions on whether he is or is not a murderer. Even more, it helps us to sympathize more with Ender, because he's so worried that he is a killer, and we now know he has actually killed kids. We know he may have a right to be worried.
  • Self-Discovery

    Self-Discovery
After graduating Battle School, Ender spent 3 months on Earth. In that time, Ender did a lot of thinking and he's learned some truths about himself. For a time, Ender hated himself. He may even still hate himself, but now he knows why. He understands people. Understands them enough to know how to beat them. And once he understands them like that, he also loves them. Then he destroys them so they can never hurt him again. He hates himself for this.
  • The War is Over

    The War is Over
Ender just did his "final examination" in Command School. In this last battle, Ender decides he's sick of all the games and chooses to blow up the planet in the game in order to defeat those who manipulate him into playing. Instead, he finds out he's been fighting in the war ever since coming to Command School. They weren't ever games. Upon finding out, Ender is angry because he was manipulated into killing thousands of beings.
