  • Warsaw Pact is Dissolved

    The Soviet Union and seven of its European satellites signed a treaty establishing the Warsaw pact. This pact was a mutual defense organization that put the Soviets in command of the armed forces of the member states.
  • Collapse of the Berlin Wall

    The Berlin Wall was a boarder that completely cut off West Berlin from surronding East Germany and East Berlin. It was constructed by the German Democrat Republic. The actual Wall itself was destroyed in 1990.
  • U.S. boycott of 1980 Summer Olympics

    These boycotts were part of a package of initiated actions by the United States against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The boycotts proceeded into the next 1984 summer olympics.
  • Strategic Defense Initiative

    Otherwise known as the "Star War" the Strategic Defense Initiative was an organization issued by President Reagan. The SDI proposed the development of technology that could intercept nuclear missiles, with microwave lasers and particle beams.
  • Iran-Contra Affair

    President Reagan gave away weapons to Iran which was an enemy of the United States. His hopes were that the country would realse the America hostages because of the gifts. This was not authorized by the United States congress.
  • Caribbean Basin Intitiative

    The Caribbean Basin Initiative was a temporary program that was created by the United States. Its purpose was to provided tariff and trade benefits to the Central American and Caribbean country's.
  • Mikhail Gorbachev becomes General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union

    This was the title of the leader to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Joseph Stalin elevated the position to overall command of the Communist party and by extension the whole Soviet Union.
  • Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty Ratified

    The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty was an agreement between the United States and Russia. On December, 8th, the Untied States President and General Mikhail Gorbachev signed the treaty.
  • 1st McDonalds Opens in Moscow

    The day it opened the McDonalds set a world record by serving over 30,000 people. Also some people waited for six hours because it was an unusual type of food. It became a tourist attraction noted as a "must see place".
  • Germany is Re-unified

    Germay was re-unified when the German Democrat Republic joined the Federal Republic of Germany. This was when Germany and Berlin united into a single city.
  • Boris Yelstin elected President of Russia

    Boris Yelstin was President of Russia from 1991 to 1999. He had served two terms as President. It was Vladimir Putin who took is place when he finally decided to step down.
  • End of the Soviet Union

    The collapse of the Soviet Union began in 1985, but took many years to finalize. Consequently most of the focus was on the crash of the economic standpoint.
