    U.S.Boycott of 1980 Summer Olympics
    This was a protests against the Olympics in Moscow agaisnt the Soviets entering Afganistan. An ultimatum was made that if the Soviets did not withdraw from Afganistan within one month, then the United States would boycott the Olympics.
  • Strategic Defense Initiative

    Strategic Defense Initiative
    Otherwise known as "Star Wars". the strategic defense initiatve was proposed in 1983. Ronald Reagan proposed the idea to develop an anti-ballistic missile system to prevent missile attacks from the Soviet Union and other countries.

    The Caribbean Basin Initiative, otherwise known as the CBI, was made to provide tariff and trade benefits to Caribbean countries. It promoted economic stability and economic development. This was a temprary program in the United States.

    Gorbachev was elected as the General Secretary of Russia in 1985. He was no longer the secretary in 1991. He was the president of Russia from 1990-1991, after being the General Secretary.

    Otherwise knowa as the Iran-Contra Scandal, this was a secret agreement between Iran and the United States. It would provide funds to the Nicaraguan contra rebels from profits gained by selling arms to Iran. Iran was getting weapons from the United States when they were at war with Iraq.

    The INF was an agreement between the United States and the Soviet Union.The treaty eliminated intermediate range and shorter range missiles between the United States and the Soviet Union.

    The Berlin Wall was a barrier that cut off West Berlin from East Berlin and East Germany. The Communists block began to weaken over the years, and guards by the wall eventually started to let people cross over th eborder. The wall was chipped away eventaully, and people kept them as keepsakes.

    McDonalds recieved permission from the Communist party to start the business in the Soviet Union. Two years later, the first restaurant opened for business in Moscow on Pushkinskaya square
  • Germany is reunified

    Germany is reunified
    East and West Germany reunified in 1990. In East Germany, conservative parties supporting reunification won the elections, and then decided to unify the two back together.
  • Warsaw Pact is dissolved

    Warsaw Pact is dissolved
    Also known as the Treaty of Friendship, Co-operation, and Mutual Assistance, the Warsaw Pact was a defense treaty between eight communist states in Central and Eastern Europe during the Cold War. When the war ended, the Warsaw Pact collapsed and would be put to rest.

    60-year-old Boris Yeltsin was the first elected president of Russia.He was previously a Russian Polititian and served as the president until 1999.
