U.S. Boycott 1980 Summer Olympics
The United States protested against the invasion of Aganistan by boycotting the 1980 Summer Olympics. In total, 65 other countries also refused to participate. -
Strategic Defence Initiative
This program was initiated by President Ronald Reagon in March of 1983. The program was designed to create a highly advanced anti- ballistic missile system to prevent nuclear attacks form countries, such as the Soviet Union. This move was made to help American feel more secure about the possiblility of a Soviet Union attack. -
"Caribbean Basin Initiative"
This program was initiated by the 1983 Caribbean Basin Economic Recovery Act. It's purpose was to create and enforce trade and Tariff benefits to the countties in that region. -
Mikhail Gorbachev becomes General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union
The title of "General Secretary" was given to a person who was now responsible for the Communist party of the Soviet Union. Mikhail Gorbachev was elected to this position by Joseph Stalin. The position mainly includes secretarial work as well as tryng to expand the country. -
Iran-Contra Affair
The Iran- Contra Affair was a secret arrangement within the United Sates. It basically stated that the US would help fund Nicaraguan contra rebels from the profits the US made by selling arms to Iran. -
Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) ratified
The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty was between the US and the USSR. This treaty basically stated that no nuclear weapons would be made or placed with in close range of the other. This went for both countries. -
Berlin Wall Collapses
The Berlin Wall was put up to seclude the democratic people of Germany from all suplies in order to hopefully force them into communism. Thankfully, this plan backfired because the larger democratic nations began constantly flying supplies in. But then the Soviets decided they would allow communist citizens in and out whenever they pleased so instead of letting that happen people stormed the wall with hammers and tools and finally broke it down. -
First McDonald's opens in Moscow
By opening a Mcdonalds in Russia it was a major sign of changing for the Soviet Union. For one it showed sinces of capitalism taking hold which was the Soviet Union had fought so hard against. Eventually this small store would grow until communism was almost destroyed. -
Boris Yelstin elected President of Russia
Boris Yeltsin was the first openly elected President of Russia (The USSR) He would end up trying to destroy Gorbachev's reforms which gained him support which helped him win a relection. -
Germany Reunified
Because of the fight over communism Germany was split it in two; one side supporting communism and the other democracy. These two sides were actually seperated by a terrible wall that locked out the democratic side from supplies. After this wall was taken down and communism began to falter German was once again reunited. -
Warsaw Pact is dissolved
The Warsaw Pact was an agreement among the major communist coutries that stated that if one of them was to be attacked the others would come to aid them. This act was slowly broken apart by anti- communists acts which slowly stole all the support from the Warsaw Pact. -
End of the Soviet Union
Do to many things the once powerful Soviet Union began to fall. From everything from a new leader to loss of support this nation had a rapid downfall. With the fall of the Soviet Union the end of the Cold War came as well.
