  • Germany is reunified

    Process in which the German Democratic Republic joined the Federal Republic of Germany to form the reunited nation of Germany. Berlin reunited into a single city, as provided by its then Grundgesetz constitution Article 23.
  • U.S. boycott of 1980 Summer Olympics

    Boycotting the Moscow Olympics was one of numerous actions taken by the United States to protest the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan. The Soviet Union and some other countries would later support the 1984 Summer Olympics boycott, also.
  • Strategic Defense Initiative

    Nicknamed "Star Wars", the SDI was a program initiated during President Ronald Reagan's term. The purpose of the program was to develop a mature, not gravity dependentmissile system in order to prevent missile attacks from other countries, like the Soviet Union.
  • “Caribbean Basin Initiative”

    The CBI was an independent and temporary United States program initiated by the 1983 Caribbean Basin Economic Recovery Act (CBERA). The CBI aimed to provide several tariff and trade benefits to Central American and Caribbean countries.
  • Mikhail Gorbachev becomes General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union

    Mikhail was a former Soviet statesman. He was the eighth, and last, leader of the Soviet Union. He served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 until 1991 when that dissolved and he served as the country's head of state from 1988 until its dissolution
  • Iran-Contra Affair

    This was the name given to a series of secret, illegal actions by US government officials under President Ronald Reagan's term in office. In 1985, officials in the National Security Council sold military weapons to Iran so they could help in free US prisoners in Lebanon.
  • Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) ratified

    Treaty between the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics to eliminate their intermediate-range and shorter-range Missiles. It eliminated nuclear and conventional ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with intermediate ranges, defined as between 500-5,500 km, or 300-3,400 miles.
  • Berlin Wall Collapses

    The Cold War had already began to simmer down across Eastern Europe. Then, the spokesman for East Berlin's Communist Party announced a change in his city's relations with the West. This represented the beginning to a new life and new freedoms for the citizens of that country.
  • 1st McDonalds opens in Moscow

    The Soviet Union’s first McDonald’s fast food restaurant opens in Moscow. People af different cultures and backgrounds came together to taste the new restaurant's food.
  • Boris Yeltsin elected President of Russia

    Yeltsin was a Russian politician and the first President of the Russian Federation, who served from 1991 to 1999. He was originally a supporter of Mikhail Gorbachev, but Yeltsin emerged under the perestroika reforms as one of his most powerful political opponents.
  • End of the Soviet Union

    Gorbachev resigned from his leader position and the remaining twelve republics emerged from the dissolution of the Soviet Union as independent states. There are now 15 nations where the Soviet once was.
  • Warsaw Pact is dissolved

    A collective defense treaty among eight communist states of Central and Eastern Europe in existence during the Cold War. It was the military complement to the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance, the regional economic organization for the communist States of Central and Eastern Europe.
