Peter Hawkins, President of the Incorporated Law Society in Exeter, sends his first letter to the Earl to send his replacement Jonathan Harker in his place as in charge of arranging his new residency in London.

a storm hits the small town at night. During the storm, a Russian schooner enters the port. A dead man hangs on the steering wheel, tied with a rope and, during the entrance, a huge dog jumps overboard and later loses its track.
