Jul 23, 1954 Sheppard denies having an affair with Susan Hayes Aug 17, 1954 Grand jury agrees on first degree murder indictment against Sheppard Oct 18, 1954 The trials opens in Cleveland to Judge Edward Blythin Dec 21, 1954 The jurys verdict is guilty of murder in the second degree. Jan 7, 1955 Ethel Sheppard, Sams mother, commited suicide Jan 18, 1955 Dr. Richard Sheppard, Sams father, dies of cancer. Apr 1, 1955 Corrigan files for a motion for a new trial. Jul 13, 1955 The Eighth District Ohio Court of Appeals confirms denial for the motion for a new trial Jul 14, 1955 Sheppard tranferred to a maximum security prison near Columbus. Jul 16, 1964 Judge Weinman dismisses Sheppards conviction, calling it "a mockery of justice". Sheppard was released on a $10,000 bond. He decides to marry Ariane Tebbenjohanns. Oct 24, 1966 Sheppards second trial begins. Apr 6, 1970 Sam Sheppard convicted of murder. Jun 18, 1970 Sam's wife, Ariane, & his son, Chip, break Sam out of prison and flee the country. Sep 26, 1970 The law enforcement cant find the trio, so the case goes cold.
