Dolley Payne is born in the Quaker community of Guilford County, North Carolina. Her parents are John Payne and Mary Coles Payne.

The Payne family moves to Hanover County, Virginia. Dolley's parents had recently lived here before Dolley was born.

John Payne liberates the families slaves and moves the Payne's to Philadelphia where he will begin a starch manufacturing business.

Dolley's father's starch business fails so he can no longer pay his debts. The quaker community rejects him which throws him into an everlasting deep depression. Mary Coles Payne supports the family by taking in boarders. Most are Congressmen who represent districts in other states.

Dolley recieves a lifetime seat of House Floor but is forced to move out of Montpelier due to financial problems.
