Semmelweis was offered his first medical position in 1846 at the Vienna General Hospital as an assistant in the maternity ward.

The ward that Semmelweis worked in had a really bad reputation. Most of the woman would rather have their baby out in the streets than in ward No 1. There was an average fatality rate of 17% 36 out of 208 women died.

Jakob Kolletschka, A colleague of Semmelweis Died. He was cut with a scalpel during an autopsies. Semmelwies then ordered all the medical staff on ward No 1 to wash their hands with lime Chlorinated water

Ignaz turned his concerns to child bed fever. a lot of people rejected his work and evidence. Ignaz was then tricked into visiting a mental asylum, when he tried to leave he was forcibly restrained and put in a strait jacket, he then died due to his injuries two weeks later
