    Daniel Clement Dennett III was born on March 28, 1942, in Boston, Massachusetts by his mother, Ruth Marjorie and his father, Daniel Clement Dennett Jr.

    Dennett graduates from Phillips Exeter Academy.

    Dennett spent only one year in Wesleyan University before then going on to obtain his Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy at Harvard University in 1963. During his time at Harvard, he studied under W. V. Quine, another very important philosopher.

    Further Study in Philosophy

    Dennett received his doctorate in philosophy at the University of Oxford where he submitted his dissertation entitled, "The Mind and the Brain: Introspective Description in the Light of Neurological Findings; Intentionality," He then taught for many years at the University of Irvine until 1971.
  • Theories of Consciousness, Free Will, and Philosophy of the Mind

    Dennett contributed many works towards the study of the human consciousness of self. In his work with Michael Cohen, "Consciousness Cannot Be Separated from Function" he delves deeply into this philosophy and in fact how we can study it properly. "We discuss the criteria necessary for forming and testing a falsifiable theory of consciousness." Published in 2011.
