Daniel Dennett is a Boston, Massachusetts born American philosopher that studies the mind. His father was Islamic history scholar and mother was a teacher. Dennett graduated from Harvard University with his philosophy degree then proceeded to the University of Oxford for his PHD.

Dennett became the director of the Center for Cognitive Studies at Tufts University in Massachusetts. He was initially considered a radical because of his outlook on how the mind affects the body. This would eventually change the more that he uncovered about how the brain works

"His 2006 volume Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon advanced evolutionary explanations for the development of religious thought. He considered religious inclinations to be largely a by-product of instinct-driven social phenomena." In other words he believed when we as humans don't have an evident answer to something we utilize religion to explain the phenomenon.
