Born Daniel Clement Dennett III in Boston Massachusetts.

Received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Harvard University, and then went on to pursue graduate studies at Oxford.

After receiving his doctorate degree, Dan moves back to the United States to teach at the University of California, Irvine.

Daniel moved to Medford, Massachusetts, to work at Tufts University where he is appointed University Professor. Later on, in 1985 he became the Director of Cognitive Studies here as well for his contributions to cognitive science. He is also appointed Austin B. Fletcher Professor in 2000.

He wrote many books throughout his career on the idea of consciousness, two of them being "Consciousness Explained" (1991) and "Darwin's Dangerous Idea" (1995). Dennett begins working with a team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in an attempt to build an intelligent (and maybe conscious) robot, named Cog.

Daniel writes "Breaking the Spell: Religion and Natural Phenomenon". This volume advanced evolutionary explanations for religion, and he lectured and debated the topic of religion widely. His alignment with atheist activists Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris led Hitchens to call their group the "Four Horsemen of the Counter-Apocalypse".
