At age 40, Dan was content with his life working his dream job making a lot of money to be able to send his kids to a private school. In Erikson's seventh stage of generativity versus stagnation, the crisis is failure to achieve your goals and become torpid (stagnant) and feel unproductive.

Looking back on his life at the age of 60, Dan sees his accomplishments (Ego Integrity) and he is proud of all the things that he accomplished. He is satisfied with his decisions and has no regrets in life. In Erikson's eight stage, ego integrity versus despair, the crisis is the satisfaction with your accomplishment or the guilt (despair) of wishing you have done more.
