    Paul Allen and Bill Gates

    Paul Allen went to Lakeside School, a private school, with Bill Gates, who was three years younger. He befriended him because they shared a common interest in computers. They worked on their school's Teletype terminal to develop their programming skills. After earning a perfect score on the (pre-1995) SAT of 1600, Allen went to Washington State University but dropped out after two years to work as a programmer for Honeywell in Boston, where he was near his old friend.

    Allen con-founded Microsoft with Gates in Albuqueque, New Mexico, in 1975, and began marketing a BASIC programming language interpreter. In 1980, after promising to deliver IBM a Disk OS for the Intel 8088-based IBM PC, Allen managed a deal with Seattle Computer Products to purchase a QDOS written by Tim Patterson. As a result, Microsoft was able to secure a contract to get the DOS that would run on IBM's PC line. This was a watershed that led to Gate and Allen's wealth.
