Eleven European countries took a historical step forward by all adopting the same currency, called the "euro." Because of this, people can travel to differnet countries in Europe without having to exchange their currency for that of another. It can be said that the technical change over to the euro was a huge success. -
USA vs Microsoft
Doesn't this just sound crazy? This was the day that Judge Jackson (this was a trial) stated that Microsoft had commited monopolization, attempted monopolization, and tying in violation of Sections 1 and 2 of the Sherman Act, and his remedy was that Microsoft must be broken into two separate units, one to produce the operating system, and one to produce other software components. Like I said, crazy, right? -

This act concerns the education of children in public schools. It requires all states to develop assessments in basic skills to be given to all students in certain grades, if those states are to receive federal funding for schools. This a law today. -
Sweden says "No"
After the establishment of the euro in 1999, multiple countries had adopted it to use as currency. Sweden was not one of those countries. This was the day that Swedish voters rejected joining the Economic and Monetary Union of the European Union and adopting the Euro. Way to stand out, Sweden. -

Pluto is Declared to be a "Dwarf Planet"
Everybody remembers this. It's the day that the IAU defines the term "planet" and hurts poor little Pluto's feelings by telling it that it's too small to hang out with Jupiter and his gang of gas giants. Just think; Pluto was discovered over 70 years ago and it was living the good life. Then, he is informed that he was never supposed to be able to play with the big boys. It's not like Mercury is much bigger! -

Another planet was discovered on this day. It is a potentially Earth-like extrasolar planet dubbed "Gliese 581 c." It may be able to sustain life, but it is still unconfirmed. -

This total lunar eclipse lasted from the evening of February 20th to the morning of February 21st. It was visible to all of North and South America in the eastern evening sky in the evening, then to most of Africa and Europe in the predawn western sky in the morning. The next total lunar eclipse occured on December 21st, 2010. -
